Day 18 in MEL: The Great Ocean Road
Hehehehe...I just returned from my trip (The Great Ocean Road trip) which was just a day. It cost AUS$75 per person.
We left the apartment about early 7 plus in the morning and walked all the way to Market Street where we waited for the coach. It was a LONG and Winding Road...dum dum da...(The Beatles). Nice...the countryside was fascinating and beautiful. I got to see soooooo many black moo moos (cows) and some brown ones and black+white. I also saw white bah bahs (sheeps). It was so hilly and lotz of greenery.
We went passed by Geelong whereby it had a good port but Melbourne beat to it. They could have become successful but because of the sandbar thus they couldn't. Geelong has 200, 000 over people. We head to Bells Beach, it is world famous for Ripcurl (a brand) and for surfers. After that we went to Lorne Beach where we had morning tea and Lipton's normal tea was bleah!
The coach drove up some road where koalas live, I took two pics of them :D We stopped at Cape Patton Lookout for just 5 minutes. Lunch at Apollo Beach, well...I didn't eat anything but I bought two nice postcards and a fridge magnet. I just had Orange Juice. Oh Apollo got its name from a ship that sank there in 1800s.
We got to Mait's Rest Rainforest Walk...it was AWESOME! 100 times better than Singapore's mini rainforest aka Bukit Timah Hill (Nature Reserve). Part of it was Eucalyptas and the other side was the rainforest. The trees were great and sadly one of the tree was hollow in the centre but they blocked the hole after they found a couple having *ahem* yeah that. Well...he said it could fit 31 people in there! Interesting...
Next was, The Twelve Apostles but not really 12 but only 8 of them...no idea what has happened to the other 4 :P Well..the sight was fascinating..GREAT!
Just a few minutes drive to Loch Ard Gorge, VERY interesting story...it was about a ship that sunk there in 1878. There were 50+ people onboard the ship and the captain tried to avoid it but steering away but the wind and current were too strong. Thus, they tried to anchor but they could for the sand was too soft and it was all too late as they crashed and sunk slowly. There were only two survivors and they were only 18 years old. A boy named Tom something managed to swim himself to a cave and then the next morning he heard someone shouting for help. He saw a girl clinging on one of the chicken crates(I think). Her name is Eva, she was from Ireland, she came along with 8 others from her family because her father had Tuberculosis and would like a warmer climate. Anyway, she was only the sole survivor in her family and she couldn't swim, Tom went out and swam to her; rescuing her and brought her to the cave. He went wandering about and saw a bottle of brandy and drank some. He shared some with Eva too hehehe and our guide, David (guide and driver, he is great and funny...really friendly) said he had probably rubbed some on her to keep her warm :P
Anyway, he wanted to get help so AMAZINGLY he climbed up the cliff and tried to find help. He managed to and they rescued Eva. Tom was a hero but on the contrary, at that time it wasn't nice for a guy to be alone with a girl unless they were married so, he wanted to compromise that and decided to propose to Eva.
UNfortunately, he didn't get the chance to because Eva had left OZ for Ireland, it was too painful for her to think about the tragedy. She wed someone in Ireland and had three children. They lived happily ever after and as for Tom, he became captain of some ships and survived many erm shipwrecks but he died at 49 years old. Single.
Thatz the story...I got to go down to the sandy area...it was WOW! I also took pic of the cave well...I didn't walk further in because it was difficult...the sand was too SOFT. Next one was London Bridge! Well...London Bridge was really nice before it broke off in the middle thus looking somehow like Loch Ard Gorge's blow hole. THe middle part collapsed on 15th January 1990 and fortunately no one was killed. The tour group could have crossed but *PHEW!* lucky but this couple were unluck coz they were trapped on the other end so chopper had to rescue them. The media chopper got to them first and journalists tried to interview them but after they found out that they could rescue them because they (media) didn't have the license to rescue. So the couple told them to go away. Once they were rescued, they drove off quickly...reasons why...he was with another woman (not his wife) and secondly he was taking a cigi? Didn't want his boss to know..(I couldn't get that one actually) anyway...how true can this be? I don't know.
It was so dark, so we had dinner at Colac...a suburb area. I had McDonald's Fillet O' Fish Meal.
It was A LONG journey back.
TAKE CARE!
VEEL PLEZIER!
Christine.
PS: Last night, it was my first time going to a Pub...the pub's name is Cookies. It was OK...I just had orange juice. Oh yeah...ironically, Melbourne/OZ has been nice to me...since I'm leaving soon. Maybe it would like me to visit this place again?
