Bye Bye Republic Polytechnic...
Submitted my Withdrawal Form, student pass and also the VPN card on 29th March 2005. Bought myself an 80 cent souvenir from RP, it was a Post-It pad.

The first day I stepped into this class (3rd May'04), I was like...Oh my goodness, I don't know how it was going to be like, I didn't know how we were going to learn. In fact, I didn't know about this PBL system in this school. Gosh the vulgarities and such, I just couldn't take it. I hated my first day of school and was wondering how was I going to pull through.
Time went by, we got along well in first semester and we all thought we would be changing classes for our second semester and wouldn't be seeing each other. I got along with me class well coz they were funny and full of crap and mischief. We even had our first class chalet together. Just before the break was over, checked the website to see which class I had been allocated, WOW...my same classmates and classroom too! All facilitator changed except one.
Well...for second semester, I did FREAKING well for my grades and having great facilitators compared to the first semester. For second semester we had real fun faciliators and dedicated ones. This time, it is for real that we'd be splitting up into our own individual courses...we had our second chalet held in March but will be having another in mid April which, I'm looking forward to.
A little message to my class...it has been great working with you guys and girls. All of you are smart but some of you are slackers. Just make sure that this doesn't occur in year two. Well...you're all full of crap and funny, really make the class alive and full of mischief, wrestling and shouting out of faci's name while other classes were still having their meetings on. I remember...one of you (I know who) bashed the false wall and created a hole...and that silly dance. I'll remember every single one of you. Have fun in RP dudes and dudettes...never had THAT much fun and crankiness.
Reasons why I didn't want to stay in RP or even change course...
1. Stupid Creative Engagement Point Module (A waste of time to go for those talks when your mind isn't there but busy preparing for the next meeting presentation, if not some members in class had to struggle doing the presentation while the others go for talk) you got to have 40 CE points by the end of these 3 years in order to graduate. ABSOLUTE RIDICULOUS!
2. Information Technology (IT), using the Problem-Based Learning(PBL) system doesn't work for all modules. I had to take a module which was VB.NET and I struggled through it during my first year. I had no basic knowledge about this crap at all, Physics too...PBL just isn't really the way for CERTAIN modules, just got to be taught not go find out yourself.
3. IT just isn't my cup of tea, decided not to waste me time and Mom's money thus heading to Singapore Hotel And Tourism Education Centre (SHATEC) to do Culinary. Itz a two-years course and I'll be starting my first day on the 4th of July'05. Hopefully I make it.
4. Why didn't I switch course from IT --> Science? I can't take all this group work, I'm not pushy enough and I never like to order people to do stuff et cetera and mostly there will be DEFINITE slackers in the group. I'm tired of it and I don't know whether PBL will work for Science in Year Two and I don't want to take the risk. PBL did work for Year One science especially second semester.
PBL is like problem given to you, you got research and find some possible solutions to that problem and come up with a presentation, mostly all the time it is PPT (Powerpoint Presentation) by the end of the day. Then the faci will present his/her 6th presentation and then we have a quiz and have to do the evaluation on teammates. Do reflection journal. See how well your class participation and working in the group is like. After that, the faci will grade you, this is known as Daily Grade. It isn't good, coz some slackers are good at acting hardworking and faci may think he is working and suck and he excel only good during presentation. Just simply unfair to the one who does all the work.
RP doesn't have exam but we have test...well 4 Understanding Tests for each module and they will pick the best 3 out of the 4. I have 5 modules and each module a day. 16 daily grades so...they pick the best 14. Add them all up for all 5 modules we get the GPA which is Grade Point Average. First semester I had 3.2 and second semester I had 3.6 so Cummulated GPA is 3.4 which is a B. I lack of 0.1 to get a B+ well..an A is 4.0
I bet you must be going 'HUH?' itz OK...well, PBL can be fun but it nearly drived me crazy when your team depends on you to produce the work (most of the time..sorry no offense to any of you, my classmates).
Thatz about it...
Take care.
Veel plezier.
Christine.
